Having your own 4x4 wheels whilst staying at one of the camps and do self-drives in and around the park without any time restriction are the budget alternative for your safari wishes.

Our prices for a rental vehicle are per 24hrs and there are no mileage restrictions! For hires more than three days, the price includes transfers from and to Mfuwe International Airport enabling you to make full use of the vehicle. For hires three days or less, pick up and drop off of the vehicle is in the main village of Mfuwe.

4x4 Driving in the bush


Our fleet consists of Toyota  vehicles - reliable 4x4 cars widely used in Africa and perfect for self-drives. Be aware that these vehicles are not new. These sturdy vehicles are just right for the bush or visiting schools and other community projects!

Each car is serviced at our workshop after every trip and since there are no professional workshops or garages out in the bush, we try and avoid even minor roadside repairs …. But a bit of vehicle knowledge always comes handy!

  • Should you not know how to jack up a vehicle to change a tire, then maybe a self-drive trip into the splendid isolation of South Luangwa or greater Mfuwe area is not for you. 
  • Then rather choose a mix of self-drive and guided safaris, so you are not completely at loss when you end up stuck in a sandy river and forgot how to engage low gear on your vehicle (whilst possible surrounded by the lions you just wanted to get a bit closer to).
  • We most certainly offer 24/7 assistance but a call out for a flat tire is really not an emergency. If in doubt do chat with us as we always do our utmost best to assist and in the unlikely event have a replacement vehicle ready. And remember getting covered in dust whilst changing a flat tire is all part of the adventure.

For hires three days or less, pick up and drop off of the vehicle is in the main village of Mfuwe.
Stops at Tribal Textiles can be done before meeting you for the transfer. Complimentary transfers only apply on days of collecting and returning the vehicle. For short hires, meet and greet at the airport is possible against a surcharge.

Roof tent and basic camping gear for two people are available for an additional USD 30 per night. Kindly note this kit is only available for the entire rental period, alternating addition or removal of camping equipment during the hire is not possible

We highly recommend downloading the app maps.me on your phone and before arrival in Zambia download the Zambia map. You will be surprised on the accuracy of some of the remote loops in South Luangwa listed and the app works without any phone or wifi signal. So yes, do prepare for a digital detox too!

We are more than happy to arrange an itinerary for you, mixing up accommodation from north to south of South Luangwa and really exploring this beautiful park on your own self-drive.
Mixing up camping in your fully kitted vehicle with sometimes an upgrade to a chalet, all is possible!

And yes, should you wish to go on a private guided (evening) drive, we are happy to assist with that too.
So we can take you on a fully private safari when it suits you!

We had an excellent experience with Personal Touch. Ben picked us up from the airport and drove us into Mfuwe, giving us great advice about the surrounding areas. The car was in great condition and perfect for our four day self-drive safari in South Luangwa. We wanted to extend our hire which was no problem, and he even drove us back to the airport when leaving. We would happily hire cars from Ben again. Fantastic service!

There are very few car rental services in the Mfuwe area, but you don't need to look further than this one.
We rented a Toyota Landcruiser Prado for three weeks.
Excellent service and a vehicle in very good condition.
